Why rerouting a dryer vent beats cleaning the same bad run

Most reroutes here start with a duct that was never going to work. Laundry got placed in the middle of the floor plan. The vent then travels far, with too many elbows. Upstairs closets often vent vertically to a roof cap. Foil flex sags between joists on those long runs. A low point forms. Year-round humidity condenses in it. Lint packs into a wet mat instead of blowing out. Cleaning fixes that for a season. The path is the real defect.

Rerouting means shortening the run and cutting elbow count. Rigid metal replaces foil. Joints face downstream and get foil tape, not screws, since screw tips snag lint. The duct is strapped so it cannot sag again. Where possible the termination moves off the roof and out a side wall, away from salt spray that seizes damper flaps open.

Not every home can be rerouted. Stacked condo and townhome closets run through shared walls, which is association territory. Garage and carport walls must still terminate outdoors. Shallow slab-home closets sometimes only need a rigid periscope behind a deep-set dryer.

Framing and attic access matter more than duct footage. So does exterior patching on stucco or block. A short straight run rarely justifies rebuilding.
